Tomb Guardians. Tang Dynasty. Glazed Pottery figures of a Lokapala.
Lokapala N° 1: Height: 135cm; Width: 67cm
Lokapala N° 2: Height: 134cm; Width: 67cm
The guardians are modeled on top of a demon with flailing arms, with their head turned to the left side, the right hand raised to hold a weapon, now usually lost, and the left hand on the hip. They are dressed in elaborate armor including a breastplate with scrolls and animal mask epaulets surmounted by flames all glazed in amber, green and cream glazes. The unglazed faces are modeled with ferocious expressions; one of them painted with red to accent the fierceness and topped with radiating flame- like hair embellished with ornaments.
